Before this, I wrote my first handful of songs that were just my vocals and acoustic guitar with an iPad's camera in my family's kitchen. Moving past that, this was my first attempt at writing a song with the same acoustic-guitar-and-vocals format but actually getting to record with actual music gear.
This one is a tribute to my favorite Cutie Mark Crusader: Scootaloo. I always imagined that she would still find a great sense of independence and purpose even if her wings would never work for her. Her wings aren't what make Scoots the strong and lovable character that she is, and this song is about her being very proud of that fact.
This is a very early version of this song. You will see a more complete version of it later on in the album.
lyrics
I'll admit that I bucked a few trees
And had tears in my eyes
When I finally got the news
When I put together my two's and two's
That I can't have the life that I wanted to choose
That I'll never be able to fly
It seemed oh so unfair
Almost way too much to bear
These so-called "wings" on my back
Had no business being there
But these wings, yeah, they don't make me
I got something that'll never forsake me
I don't need to be high up in the sky
To know just what it's like to soar
I can still feel the wind splashing in my face
The rush of breeze gets me watery-eyed
Truth be told, I love this so much more
'Cause this is what I was meant for
When I put on my helmet and goggles
Fear is all this filly lacks
Destiny had opened my eyes
Showed that greatness doesn't have to fly
I'm just a blur as I race on by
As my screeching wheels burn up the tracks
This pegasus is something new
See my show, I got a treat for you
I'll work my magic and I'll show you all
Exactly why my name's not "Flyaloo"
Oh yeah, let me show you!
Fly-a-loo, I'll show you
Fly-a-loo, something new
You better believe it!
'Cause I don't need to be high up in the sky
To know just what it's like to soar
I can still feel the wind splashing in my face
The rush of breeze gets me watery-eyed
Truth be told, I love this so much more
'Cause this is what I was meant for
I'm not Flyaloo
No, ooo no
Not Flyaloo
